This photo was taken at a building in Amesbury, MA. A fuel oil tank was removed sometime in the past when the heating system fuel was converted to natural gas. The fill pipe, however, was left in place. If a fuel oil company delivered oil to the “wrong” address (which happens somewhere every year) the basement would be filled with at least 275 gallons before the fuel oil delivery person would realize something was wrong. In past fuel oil delivery accident cases, part of the clean up remedy involved demolition of the building.
